A quarter-mile walk between a mill pond and the Long Island Sound leads to this beach house in Westport, CT. Originally a one-story shack, we renovated the structure into a new, three-bedroom residence with an open, airy feel. Designed to dissolve the distinction between inside and out, the glass doors slide out of the way to open the entire first floor to the covered porch. The porch in turn has automatic screens hidden in the structure that can quickly drop down when needed. Since delivery access was difficult, the project required detailed research into systems and materials that facilitated site access as well as aesthetic desires.
