Looking to relocate and expand, Dean & DeLuca turned to FPE Architects to create a flagship store that would redefine the way that food is presented in a retail environment. FPE designed an open-market layout with distinct stations for meat, cheese, fish, dry goods, and cookware. This also included a working kitchen and a coffee bar. The store has influenced supermarket design nationally and has spawned many imitators. An upscale industrial aesthetic was created by complementing the existing cast-iron columns with Carrera marble flooring, installing stainless steel fixtures and industrial lighting, and applying a simple, white-on-white color scheme.
